Bus Barn Project - Introduction

The Society has a fleet of seven buses in its heritage fleet that are (nominally) going and available for charter work. Currently, these are housed our doors which is leading to a deterioration of their body work, paint, mechanicals and electrics. These is also a great need for storage room for bus spare, servicing, and bus maintenance facilities.

In addition, it is planned to include a space for administration and an archive area in this building - see "Archive Area" project.

Concept

To build a low maintenance building - approx 26m x 22m, which can house upo to 8 buses, have a service area, service pit, storage for bus spares, plus trolley bus overhead on the service road. The building would also house the proposed Administration and Archive Area. It is proposed to locate this building on the land between Tram Barn 1 and Bridle Path Road. An agreement has been entered into with the Ferrymead Trust to obtain the Tust's interest in this land once the sub-division goes through, and to this end, the Society has paid a deposit to the Trust.

Planning, Time Table & Budget

Planning has started, but we are held up progressing the too far until we have title to the land. Once we have title, the site needs to be cleared, and a substantial amount of earth (close to Bridle Path Road) needs to be removed to establish a level site. However, the new valve house beside Tram Barn 1 has been built to cater for this extension.

Initial indications is that a suitable (kitset) building - as a shell - would cost at least $200,000. Fund raising for the land is basically complete, but fundraising for the buiding has not yet started. However, the new valve. A few concept drawings follow. Also refer to the Administration and Archive Area project.
